Jan - March 2024

March Updates

D&D’s 50th anniversary celebrations may be in full swing, but that doesn’t mean the updates stop coming. This month, we have some cool new updates for Maps, the D&D Beyond App, and new books.

New Free Adventure: Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth

As part of honoring D&D’s gold anniversary, we’ve released a free, abridged version of The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. This is a one-shot version of the full adventure, which was originally written by Gary Gygax himself and will appear in its full, fifth edition form in the upcoming Quests from the Infinite Staircase, releasing July 16.

Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is playable in a single D&D session and even includes a scoring system for tournament play. We have an article on this free adventure with more information on how tournament scoring works and how to claim it.

New Partnered Content: Tome of Beasts 1 from Kobold Press

D&D Beyond’s library of third-party content continues to grow with the addition of Tome of Beasts 1 from Kobold Press. This massive bestiary contains over 400 new monsters that can be used right away in the D&D Beyond Encounters and Maps tools. You can pick up Tome of Beasts 1 now in the D&D Beyond marketplace.

Channel-Specific Characters in Avrae

Jasper’s Dice Set Update

March 22, 2023

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Jasper’s Game Day had a mission to raise funds for suicide prevention and awareness. Through this, they strove to reduce the stigma around talking about mental health so the world could start to treat it just like physical health. In doing so, they sought to help prevent suicide, and not just respond to the aftermath. They wanted to bring the community together and show everyone that they are not alone!

From its inception in 2017 to its closure in 2023, Jasper’s Game Day raised over $300,000 for suicide prevention and awareness.

In 2022, Jasper’s partnered with Die Hard Dice to produce a TTRPG dice set in support of the charity. The set was replicated digitally on D&D Beyond.

As Jasper’s Game Day closed its doors in 2023, we will be removing the dice from the D&D Beyond marketplace and donating the remaining proceeds to The Jed Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports mental and emotional health and suicide prevention in teens and young adults. For more information on this incredible organization, visit jedfoundation.org.

If you’ve previously purchased or gifted the dice, no need to worry—they will remain a part of your digital dice collection.

We are incredibly grateful to Fenway and her team for allowing us to be a part of such an amazing legacy and would like to remind everyone that a community of friends and family is behind you, even in your darkest times. You are not alone!

February Updates

This month, we kicked off celebrations for D&D’s 50th anniversary, released new features on Maps, and a whole lot more. Check out all the news below!

D&D Beyond Maps Updates

We released a new Dev Update on our YouTube channel. It highlights the new books and amazing new features released on D&D Beyond Maps, as well as what’s to come.

Check out these features new to Maps:

  • Draw has been added to the VTT! Direct your players’ attention with arrows, circle a monster or key feature of a map, or just doodle during a short rest. Usable by DMs and players, this feature uses the same color scheme as the token color rings.
  • The Connected Players Menu allows you to see which players are connected to the VTT and with which characters. In the midst of combat and need to reference a character sheet? Just click on the character name in the Connected Players Menu to open it!
  • Spectator View lets DMs see what their players see in the VTT, including fog of war, pings, and drawings. This is a handy feature for DMs who project their games onto a TV for player use or who just want to make sure their maps are set up correctly.

The following books were added to Maps this month:

As a tease of what’s to come, we’re planning on bringing in new functionality to build encounters and run combat in Maps. And, by the end of the year, you can expect to see our backlog of D&D titles implemented in the VTT. The Dev Update has more insights into all the hard work we’ve done and our plans for Maps and other D&D Beyond tools.

Humblewood Arrives to D&D Beyond

This month, we released the Humblewood Campaign Setting on D&D Beyond. This third-party book by Hit Point Press includes adorable player options and an adventure for character levels 1-5.

Introducing Maps

September 19th, 2023

Hello, adventurers!

We’re excited to announce the Alpha launch of Maps on D&D Beyond today!

Maps is a new browser-based tool that lets Dungeon Masters and players participate in tactical gameplay using maps in a shared play space on D&D Beyond.

Maps is an Alpha launch, which means it’s not finished: it will be buggy, features basic functionality, and may even crash at times as its user base grows! Our intention is to gather player feedback and continue to improve the tool with added functionality. We’re committed to consistent improvements.

Features supported at launch include:

Maps is included with the Master-tier subscription. Master Tier subscribers can launch and run a game on Maps for any registered D&D Beyond user. Dungeon Masters who would like to use the tool are encouraged to sign up for a 30-day free trial Master-tier subscription!

Dungeon Masters can launch Maps from the Maps Discovery page, while players can launch from their character sheet! The Discovery page is also where you’ll find the development roadmap, feedback portal, and FAQ. We have also published an article to serve as a light tutorial and guide as you dig in.

New Privacy Setting & Default Character Preferences

July 17th, 2023

Hello, Beyonders! We are releasing a few quality of life improvements so that you can adjust DDB a bit more to your needs:

  1. We are adding a new privacy setting for your characters. As of now, you can set your characters accessible only to the fellowship of your campaigns. You can still make a character sheet private or fully public but campaign-only is going to be your default.
  2. You can now decide about certain default behaviors of the sheet. You can set if the sheet is automatically in the Underdark mode (default is "off") and whether modifiers or ability scores should appear at the top (the default is "modifiers on top").

April - June 2023

Roundup: May 4th - June 13th

Hey, Beyonders! Your friend the Party Wizard here, hoping that you're having the Hot Druid Summer of your dreams! Let's dig into the changelog!

Our June sub perks have been released, so if Elder Flames are interesting to you, you'll want to check out the Elder Flame digital dice set.

We've clarified our language on the site surrounding our One D&D Initiative and our 2024 fifth edition rulebooks, and you can read more in our most recent community update.

In addition to V2.34 of the mobile app being released for minor big fixes and improvements, we've also improved the navigation for Android- you can now easily switch between characters, books, listings, etc. We've also updated the following books on mobile to bring them up to parity with our web experience:

  • Candlekeep Mysteries
  • Monsters of the Multiverse
  • Princes of the Apocolypse
  • Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide
  • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

Domains of Delight was released for the D&D Beyond compendium on our marketplace. Sales benefit our partners at Extra Life.

And of course, no changelog update is complete with an Avrae Update and we're up to v4.2.19 now- the details are available on github.

So long and have fun in the sun!

Roundup: April 16th - May 4th

Hello, Beyonders! If you woke up this morning wishing D&D had a dragon that did blueberry stuff, today is your lucky day. This week we released Misplaced Monsters Vol. 1: six fantastic new monsters created, described, and drawn by kids, and brought to life by D&D designers and artists.

D&D Misplaced Monsters, Vol. 1 was created in partnership with Extra Life©, a fundraising program of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals© that helps children receive crucial medical care.

All proceeds from the sale of this product go directly to the Seattle Children's© Hospital and Seattle Children's© Autism Center, supporting their mission to care for children and young adults of all backgrounds, regardless of their family's ability to pay.

Additionally, two updates to the D&D Beyond mobile app dropped, which include minor big fixes and improvements.

The latest Unearthed Arcana for playtesting the 2024 Core Rulebooks is live: it covers the rules on the Weapon Mastery property, updates to weapons, new and revised spells, several new feats, and five classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard.

And of course, what would a changelog be without an Avrae update? Find all the details on Github for v4.2.16.

Spring Time Roundup: April 1st-15th

Spring is here and that means it's time to party with me, the Changelog Wizard. I mean wizard with the Changelog Party. Yeah, that's close enough for rock n' roll!

We've laid out a new welcome mat for people who are brand new to D&D! There's a cool D&D interactive video experience, and links to premade characters and campaigns to get folks playing faster! Check it out at playdnd.com. It's a great place to direct friends and family who are exploring D&D for the first time!

Not only that, but our new player guide now has a fresh coat of paint, we released our April perks for subscribers, and due to popular demand, we've re-released the Treasure Horde digital dice set to the marketplace. Y'all like your Mimics!

Good news for anyone who missed the legendary Sam Riegel's D&D Beyond Sea Shanty on the Ghosts of Saltmarsh Table of Contents: it's back!

The mobile app has an update- v2.31 for those keeping score- which adds new search filters and the ability to copy your characters on iOS, and minor big fixes and improvements for both iOS and Android.

And of course, if wouldn't be a changelog without a packed Avrae release, v4.2.15!

See ya!

January - March 2023

Roundup: March 15th-31st

Well hello, Beyonders!

It's time for another changelog, and that means updates to Avrae! New versions of our faithful Discord bot have rolled out, and you can find details in our Avrae logs.

Here's something pretty exciting, at least to me, the Party Wizard: We've been working hard the last few months improving your experience for a lot of our books by giving them a solid facelift- from correcting typos and upgrading the user experience, to making sure that the updates and errata available for published books are reflected in the D&D Beyond Compendium. This work is now done, hooray!

There's a new Druid & Paladin feedback survey on the One D&D playtest page, so get in there and make sure we know what you hated and what you loved about our most recent round of playtests! A survey response is infinitely more valuable than a tweet!

We've also updated the media section of the mega menu to include the Dragon Talk podcast, and our Community Update page, so go check both sections out.

We're also super pumped because premade characters have finally arrived on D&D Beyond. You can now easily claim level 1 characters built on the free basic rules and join one of three free campaigns (Lost Mines of Phandelver, Frozen Sick, and Prisoner 13) to start playing with your friends in seconds.

And finally, we released free game content based on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves into the wild today for all registered users! It includes NPC stat blocks for the characters in the movie, magical items, and the Themberchaud dice set! Claim them here!

That's it for it now. See you on the next round!

New Anonymous Homepage

March 14th, 2023

Hello Beyonders!

Our homepage from the beginning has focused on the well-initiated D&D player with only the tip of the hat to the neophyte. With that in mind, we've updated the anonymous version of the homepage to make it more helpful for someone who is brand new to D&D. You'll only see it if you log out, clear your cache, or visit the site from an incognito browser.

One fun addition on the anonymous homepage is a link to Before The Storm, a guided introductory “choose your path” adventure to give people a quick glimpse of playing a tabletop roleplaying game like D&D. Please feel free to share it with your family and friends!

Weekly ~ish Roundup: March 3rd-10th

Top o' the morning to you all!

It's time for a weekly ~ish round-up. We have it on high authority from another notable Wizard (who shall not be named) that Wizards are never late, nor are they early. They post changelogs precisely when they... mean to. More or less.

First up, Avrae continues to gain more hit points with every release.

  • v4.2.11 added SimpleCombatant.is_hidden to quickly tell if a combatant is... hidden! Also we had a talk with Avrae and it will be friendlier with error messages when you put the arguments for !cc out of order.
  • v4.2.12 fixed an issue where a hidden combatant with negative max hp would not display their health at all.

Next, something fun! We've had a helpful fantasy name generator on the character sheet for a long while, and one of our artificers spruced it up. Now it allows you to shop for the perfect character name without changing the current character name or having to cycle through one option at a time. Click Suggest More until you find that perfect name, then click on it from the list to update your character name. How nice.

Fantasy name generator with multiple name options to pick

Meanwhile, you may have noticed a small banner near the footer of the page announcing an update to our privacy policy. The policy has been updated regarding new consumer privacy laws enacted in the United States. Read the updated privacy policy.

Lastly, As a registerd user, you can now claim the Thieves' Gallery to bring the heroes and villains of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to your table as NPCs with stat blocks. Once claimed, they will be available in the compendium, game data listings, and encounters.

Whew! That's all for today. Until next time!

Launched the D&D Community Update

March 9th, 2023

We've launched the D&D Community Update, a central location for publishers, creators, and fans to stay up to date on One D&D playtests, community events, and information related to the SRD and Creative Commons. This page will cover news on community events and information related to the SRD and Creative Commons.

Those topics will not be addressed here on the changelog, so please check the new page for important community-facing updates.

Wizards Authentication!

March 7th, 2023

Huzzah Beyonders!

You've asked and I've searched far and wide and finally found it in the wonderous city of Ravnica, where I persuaded the Izzet League to offer it as a gift, Wizards Authentication!

You can now create a D&D Beyond Account and Sign In with your Wizards account. For a long while now, we've heard that you want to use your own email to log in, and you can finally do so if you first create a Wizards Account.

As a cherry on top, you can also use it to access your account on the DDB Mobile app.

Ta ta for now!

Feats and Avrae 4.2.6

January 30th, 2023

Party Wizard here to give updates and chew goodberries. And since I'm all out of goodberries...

We've consolidated multiple feats that were previously split due to system constraints! This is a cool one. In the past we've needed to split feats out based on whether they contained multiple options- for example, choosing INT, WIS, or CHA as a Spellcasting ability. We are excited to announce that we are now able to combine these feats, and in doing so, cut down on a ton of clutter and redundancy.

Consolidated feats include:

Looks like if you've got a thing for feat, today is your lucky day. Users can also now add feats to their homebrew backgrounds! We're pumped to see what you come up with, creators!

And for dessert: We've also got some Avrae improvements and fixes in v4.2.6.

Howdy 2023! We're back with an early January roundup

January 19th, 2023

Beyonders, the Party Wizard has been busy with updates. Let's jump in.

Backgrounds that grant Feats are live! Moving forward, when you select a background that includes a feat, well, you're going to get that feat on your character sheet.

We've also got the most recent updates and fixes in for Avrae:

Mobile updates are next, with versions 2.24 and 2.25 of the D&D Beyond mobile app:

Android release notes:

  • You can now join a campaign by opening a link shared by the DM
  • We fixed an issue with duplicate information showing on subclass listings
  • We fixed showing duration in days for some spell listings
  • Performance improvements for spell management functionality
  • Fixed an issue with spell management not loading for some character classes

iOS release notes:

  • You can now join a campaign by opening a link shared by the DM
  • We fixed an issue with duplicate information showing on subclass listings

We've also updated the Monster Manual to bring it up to current D&D Beyond standards. It's one of the earliest books in the compendium, and was in dire need of a fresh coat of paint:

  • We've refreshed the Monster Manual to be more functional, more accessible, and easier to use.
  • We've reuploaded the art for a higher quality, and frankly, much prettier experience.

Release of the Tyranny of Dragons 2-book Set

January 17th, 2023

Today we finished work to consolidate Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat into a single new source called Tyranny of Dragons This project started in November 2022, and contains a number of sensitivity and errata-based changes. It also includes updated images, improved accessibility, and an overall facelift to be brought in line with current D&D Beyond compendium standards.

Will you lose access to your stuff? Nope! All existing owners of one or both books will be granted the new source- and if you have access to particular magic items or monsters, you won't lose them. The source listed on the game data listings will be updated to say 'Tyranny of Dragons'.

Moving forward, the new book will be available for purchase on the marketplace, while the older individual sources will no longer be for sale.

The old sources (Hoard and Rise) will only be receiving minor updates - users will need to use the new Tyranny of Dragons source for the most updated text/data/features.

October - December 2022

Out for a long winter's nap

December 16th, 2022

Hello Beyonders! It's been a full year even though we've been a bit quiet. The teams, and even me, the Party Wizard, are in for a long winter's nap. We will pick back up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in early January. Until then, we wish you all, our beloved Beyonders, joyous holidays and a happy new year!

Behold! The Party Wizard is here!

December 14th, 2022

Greetings, Beyonders- and welcome to the all new version of the D&D Beyond changelog. There's always been a changelog, but it wasn't exactly very easy to find- now updates are well organized, and front and center! The second issue was that the changelog was not written by me, the Party Wizard. What is a Party Wizard? I'm a digital entity who lives inside of D&D Beyond- I'm always cheering on your games and sending your dice rolls good vibes. Click around on the homepage enough, and you might even catch a glimpse of me!

I'm here to make sure you know about some of the work going on behind the scenes at D&D Beyond on a regular basis- especially the stuff that impacts you, like Compendium changes and Avrae updates. If you've got questions, thoughts, or concerns, you should head to our Discord! We wouldn't be where we are without you, so dig in, take a look, and let's keep the changelog party rolling!

Behold! I am the party wizard!

Weekly Roundup: Dec 5th-9th

We're into December! Time flies, folks- even for Party Wizards like me. In December, two things are inevitable: Mariah Carey and D&D Beyond updates:

We've made some tweaks in the compendium by adding missing data to the Full Description fields of backgrounds from Acquisitions Incorporated and Spelljammer: Adventures in Space.

Additionally, the survey date for the One D&D Unearthed Arcana for the Clerics and Revised Species playtest has been adjusted from Dec 21 to Dec 22.

Turkey legs. Sorry, they're just on my mind- the thought process of a Party Wizard is a complex one! When I said 'turkey legs,' I meant to say "turkey legs.' I mean 'UA updates.' I'm hungry.

  • Map 4.2: Agora was misspelled as "Asora" in both the Table of Contents and in the caption beneath the map in Chapter 4.
  • A quick peek behind the curtain: we consolidated the Resilient feats into a single Resilient feat for testing purposes in preparation for Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen.
  • Any users that currently have one of the existing child feats equipped, such as Resilient (Charisma), will not see any change on their character sheet unless they remove it from the character.

Weekly Roundup: Nov 7th-11th

Before we get into this week's updates, Beyonders, you might be asking: who is the Party Wizard? Well, I'm just a digital entity inside D&D Beyond here to help make your games better. Update on D&D vs. Rick and Morty

October 28th, 2022

D&D vs. Rick and Morty Book Cover

As a result of our licensing agreement with Adult Swim expiring, Dungeons and Dragons vs. Rick and Morty will be delisted and removed from the marketplace. This means it will no longer be available for purchase on D&D Beyond.

What does that mean for anyone that currently owns it or has it shared with them? You'll still have complete access to the source and all of the contents within - we're not changing that or removing it in any way, shape, or form. In addition, you will be able to access it on the D&D Beyond Mobile app (again, as long as you already owned it or if it was shared with you).

Mobile app v2.20

Weekly Roundup: Oct 17th-21st

  • We released an update to the PHB and Basic Rules in the Mobile App! It resolves an issue with the mobile app where iPads set to "Book Display Style" and on a vertical orientation resulted in being unable to read the content.

All the details in the usual places.

New Features

  • Add an -effects arg to !init reroll to clear all ieffects from all combatants, to ease resetting of combat
  • Add an AliasSpellbook.find(spellname) method to get a list of copies of that spell within the spellbook

Improvements

  • Update the phrasing on -f fields in !help embed, to help clarify that inline fields are only inline to themselves and a max of 3 per 'row'
  • Only check the first three letters and case desensitize -with arg input for !cast, similar to what !save does for its input

Bug Fixes

  • Adds direct handling for the Tales from the Yawning Portal entitlements

Weekly Roundup: Oct 10th-14th

We've managed some 'manage spell' updates!

  • After multi-classing, spells that were on both spell lists were not able to be prepared/learned- for example, if you had a Level 8 Cleric/Level 1 Divine Sorcerer, going to the "Manage Spells" section of the character sheet made the shared spells (like Cure Wounds) unclickable so you couldn't learn or prepare it! Issue solved- prepare away!
  • Additional spells from Tasha's Optional class features would previously not appear until after preparing/learning a different spell. For instance, if you went to "Manage Spells" in the character sheet for your Druid and unprepared a Druid spell, none of the spells from the "Additional Druid Spells" optional feature would show up- even if it was enabled from the character builder! This has been resolved.

We've also made a number of book fixes. We...

  • Added a charge to the clockwork amulet magic item to improve the item's functionality on the character sheet.
  • Added 1 magic item from Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage and 1 magic item from Hoard of the Dragon Queen. These magic items were not previously created in our system. They have now been created and provided to all current owners of these books. Can you find what was missing?
  • Added tooltips for the new items in the appropriate compendium chapters
  • Fixed minor typos and tooltip issues in the Compendium and the Alkilith monster listing (non-errata changes)
  • Updated monster listing for Klauth to contain proper modifiers according to its proficiency bonus (non-errata)

Weekly Roundup: Oct 3rd-7th

Dearest user,

We've added an Action to the cleric's Destroy Undead class feature on the character sheet. This displays information about the feature in the Actions pane of the character sheet for all clerics of 5th level or higher.

There were two fixes, one to the Monsters of the Multiverse Compendium, and the other to Monstrous Compendium Vol 1: Spelljammer Creatures! We've resolved an issue where some of the compendium page slugs in the CP were overwritten by the DoSI migration causing it to be inaccessible to users (no user-facing changes other than restoring access).

Hey! Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is now live!

And finally, we've added a delete button for feats on the feat plane to allow users to delete feats that are deleted from homebrew. Go delete that feat!

Statement on the Hadozee

September 2nd, 2022

We wanted to acknowledge and own the inclusion of offensive material within our recent Spelljammer: Adventures in Space content. We failed you, our players and our fans, and we are truly sorry.

The campaign includes a people called Hadozee which first appeared in 1982. Regrettably, not all portions of the content relating to the Hadozee were properly vetted before appearing in our most recent release. As we continue to learn and grow through every situation, we recognize that to live our values, we have to do better.

Throughout the 50-year history of Dungeons & Dragons, some of the characters in the game have been monstrous and evil, using descriptions that are painfully reminiscent of how real-world groups have been and continue to be denigrated. We understand the urgency of changing how we work to better ensure a more inclusive game.

Effective immediately, we will remove the offensive content about Hadozee in our digital versions - and these will no longer be included in future reprints of the book. Our priority is to make things right when we make mistakes. In addition, we’ve initiated a thorough internal review of the situation and will take the necessary actions as a result of that review.

We are eternally grateful for the ongoing dialog with the D&D community, and we look forward to introducing new, engaging and inclusive content to D&D for generations to come. D&D teaches that diversity is strength, for only a diverse group of adventurers can overcome the many challenges a D&D story presents. In that spirit, we are committed to making D&D as welcome and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

August 5th, 2022

Hi all!

We've made some changes to the Sources section of our desktop site navigation (affectionately referred to as Mega Menu).

Since it's release in 2019, it had become quite expansive with each new book we added and was already unusable on some of our more popular laptop screen sizes. We've even had to avoid adding some of our recent digital releases as there just wasn't any room.

To solve this problem, we've removed our least popular books. However, we've made it easier (and more obvious) to get to our Sources page which will always have every book:

Mega Menu

Once you're on the Sources page, you can filter to find exactly what you're looking for:

We know that this change means an extra step to get to some of our content, but we've put this off for far too long. The mobile menu will be getting updated in the new couple of weeks with similar changes as we prefer to keep them in parity.

While this alleviates the immediate problems, we do not consider it a long-term solution. We will continue exploring ways to make navigating our site easier and hope to give y'all the ability to personalize that experience in the future. For now, this change will allow us to make sure we can always keep our latest content where it's easiest to find - so keep an eye out for New! labels which will be presented in yellow text.

That's it for now! Have a wonderful day and may your dice be kind!

Mobile app v2.14

July 22nd, 2022

We're currently rolling out v2.14 of the mobile app. If it hasn't auto-updated for you yet, you can visit the App Store or Google Play to manually download this version.

This release brings the requested download and update all functionality to Android users as well as a number of improvements and bug fixes. See below for changes per platform.

Android:

  • New bottom bar and currency icons
  • Listings contain the name of the book that they come from
  • You can now enable the setting in the app which prevents the screen from auto-locking when viewing the character sheet
  • Fixed a bug with certain homebrew descriptions not being shown completely
  • Some users will start to see the Download and Update all functionality in the Library. We will be monitoring the stability of this new feature and roll it out to all users once we're confident it doesn't cause issues.

iOS:

  • If a rule has its description and is within another description, you can now tap it to get more details
  • Fixed a bug with the outlander background not opening

Compendium Quality of Life Updates!

July 15th, 2022

Hey everyone!

I'm beyond excited to tell everyone all about a number of improvements that we've brought to the Compendium over the last few weeks. Without further ado, let's get into it!

Sidebar Improvements & Fixes!

A change that has certainly been long overdue in my opinion - we've finally given the compendium sidebar some much needed love! Here are some of the key improvements we've made:

  • The sidebar now has a scrollbar (and is scrollable) to help accommodate pages that have a large number of entries. This means that regardless of your screen resolution, you'll always be able to see all the entries without it being cut off.
  • The sidebar now has a darker background to indicate when entries are part of a larger section (for example rooms in a dungeon).
  • The sidebar now accurately tracks your position on the page and bolds the corresponding location.
  • The sidebar will no longer get cut off by the footer of a page.

Here's an example of some of these improvements in action:

Against the Giants

In the coming weeks and months, we will be making more strides toward consolidating many of the split chapters and better improving the experience of the compendium pages (both old and new) so that there aren't quite as many splits like in the .gif above.

Book Refreshes!

A few weeks ago, we updated two more of our older books to meet our current standards of style, accessibility, and better usability; Princes of the Apocolypse and Lost Mine of Phandelver. Here's a quick look at what we've done:

  1. Making sure that the books are as easy to navigate as possible. This meant that we made sure to add hyperlinks whenever possible and made sure that it brought you to the exact place you would expect - whether that meant a specific section of the page you're on or to a specific room in another chapter.
  2. Better accessibility. Along with our current standards, we ensured that any and all image subtitles were placed on the page as text instead. We've also begun using more tools to help us with providing more context to screen reader users (using hidden text that's still picked up by screen readers) in order to provide greater clarity (such as with multiple links) We will continue to iterate and improve in this regard.
  3. Better theming. We've also given this book a visual upgrade in various respects. Not only does it more closely match the book's styles and colors more closely - but with Princes of the Apocolypse I was able to implement something I've always wanted to do for this book - specially styled statblocks! Here's a sneak peek of what I mean:

The Eternal Flame Priest finally lives up to his name
  4. General improvements. Consistent with all of our other refreshes - we've also increased the amount of tooltips, increased the quality of the images, and made many other improvements that should make it a lot easier to use!

Lost Mine of Phandelver - available at no cost to D&D Beyond users!

Other Improvements

Here are a few other improvements we've also made to make your experience better:

  • Changed the font size of the various headers to be more consistent and not as weirdly sized.
  • Using more consistent and better semantic HTML (such as table captions and ensuring that we don't skip header levels).
  • Fixed some minor issues with statblock formatting and made other improvements like darkening the color of tooltips within a statblock to make them easier to read.
  • Added hover/focus state to all links in the compendium (when focused/hovered over, the link will have an underline) as well as states for some of the other interactive elements (like the "back to the top" button in the bottom right).
  • Improvements to the Table of Contents for our books to be more useful, easier to use, and provide better accessibility. This updated style will be rolled out to more books over the next several months and we will continue to iterate on the design.

Mobile app v2.13

July 12th, 2022

In v2.13, we provided new and important quality of life improvements and bug fixes:

Darkvision Fix

February 14th, 2022

Darkvision unintentionally stacking or stacking incorrectly is now fixed.

We have added two modifiers to make the whole system work.

  1. Setting darkvision to a specific amount and take the higher value if the darkvision is multi sourced.
  2. Grant a bonus to existing darkvision making the bonuses cumulative.

Example 1

Creating an Elf character, that is a gloomstalker and then equipping the character with goggles of night.

  • Base darkvision of 60 ft from Elf.
  • Gloomstalker feature adds 30 ft, increasing it to 90 ft.
  • Goggles of Night add 60 ft, increasing to 150 ft. FIXED. (Now cumulative and no longer taking the largest bonus of the two resulting in 120ft)

Example 2

Creating a Human character, that is a gloomstalker and then equipping the character with goggles of night.

Expected behaviour:

  • No base darkvision.
  • Gloomstalker feature grants darkvision of 60 ft.
  • Goggles add 60 ft, increasing to 120 ft. FIXED (Now cumulative and no longer taking the largest bonus of the two resulting in 90ft)

Cointainers are now available in your inventory!!!

February 10th, 2022

Containers now can hold coins!

This is currently now available to everyone.

If you navigate to your coins in the upper right of your inventory and click open the side bar you will now see a settings cog right of the Manage Coin title. If you click into the settings cog there is now a selection to 'PUT COINS IN CONTAINERS' (Track individual coin totals for different containers in your inventory.) Turning this on will now 'afford' you the ability to place coinage into any inventory item that is a container.

  • Manage Inventory > Coin Count
  • Manage Coin (sidebar) > Settings Cog > Put Coins in Containers > Select ON

Tax Law Compliance

February 10th, 2022

In order to ensure the company's compliance with applicable tax laws, we are introducing (on a go-forward basis) a sales tax charge on subscription auto-renewal transactions. This change will impact subscribers who have subscribed before December 4th, 2019, and have not been charged sales tax on a regular basis (post-December 4, 2019 subscribers are already charged for sales taxes). The sales tax amount will be calculated based on the provided state and country of residence. These sales tax charges will be added to all recurring transactions. No charges will be applied retroactively.

Roll from a Monster Stat-block on the Combat Tracker

Hello,

Thank you to everyone who has responded and given us feedback around the Encounter Beta. It's been really great to see everyone enjoying the updates!

As feedback, one thing came up a LOT and that was the ability to roll from the monster stat blocks on the Combat Tracker. For those that rolled high on your history check, you know that about a year ago we released rollable monster stat blocks on the combat tracker to subscribers only.

As of this morning, we've pushed that out to free users as well so now everyone can roll from monster stat blocks in the Combat Tracker!

Twitch Extension Status

February 2nd, 2022

Hey adventurers!

The time has come to bid a fond farewell to the current iteration of the D&D Beyond Twitch Extension. While the tool has had a good ride since its launch in October of 2018, it's now time for us to look ahead and consider even better ways to serve you, the creators in our community. Here are a few brief details regarding the sunsetting of the current extension:

Why did the extension stop working?

Twitch recently changed some internal policies, and our extension, which we hadn't updated, was deactivated by the platform. As content creators' needs have changed, as D&D's rules have changed, and as our tools and services have changed, our original Twitch extension wasn't meeting our standards for quality, nor did it represent what today's D&D Beyond toolset can do. Rather than putting bandages on top of bandages to maintain the current extension, we decided to allow the extension to retire.

Will the extension come back?

Short answer: YES! While we wish our timing had better aligned with Twitch's changes, instead of developing a new version of the Twitch extension, we've put our sights on a new set of tools to support creators who want to use D&D Beyond in their game streams and content.

Thank you for using the Twitch extension these past few years, and we are grateful for your patience as we chart a new course for game streams and content tools. We will keep the community posted on major milestones as the work progresses.

Death Saving Throws

Jan 20, 2022

Hello adventurers,

We're excited to announce that a new addition has been made to the combat tracker: Death saving throws! DMs using the combat tracker will not have to stare at a big red 0 while keeping track of how close to a TPK they are!

When a player changes their HP to 0, an empty set of death saving throws will appear where the HP once was. With each successful roll, a green circle will be filled in and with each failure, a red. Once the characters receive some sort of healing and regain their hit points, the death saving throws will disappear and the current hit points will be visible again.

Death saving throws are now visible in the combat tracker!

Mobile app v2.06

January 18th, 2022

The necessity to download the entire book in order to update it required time and bandwidth. We changed the entire mechanism of updating books to make them smaller and easier to prepare.

You can now expect updates to books which are going to take just a few megabytes to download. In the upcoming weeks we are going to be releasing updates to many books to provide the latest versions of the content.

But we did not forget about character sheets. You can now track charges directly in the app.

Stay tuned for more updates soon!

Cointainers are now available in your inventory (Beta)

Containers now can hold coins!

This is currently only available to Subscribers for testing purposes. We hope to release it to everyone soon.

This is manual management only, so if you want to spread your wealth around, you will have to divvy up you coin to your chosen containers and then subtract it from where you got it.
